2016 NFL Draft: Washington Redskins Pre-Combine Seven-Round Mock

By Jason Fletcher

The Washington Redskins surprised the entire league as they finished 2015 with a 9-7 record and won the NFC East. Kirk Cousins led the offense to 353.8 yards per game, as he threw for a career-high 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 69.8 percent of his passes. The defense, however, didn’t fare as well which is why I expect the Redskins to target defense heavily in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Here’s a recent seven-round mock draft I completed for the team using FanSpeak’s mock draft simulator.

Round 1, No. 21 Overall: DT A'Shawn Robinson, Alabama

Robinson was a dominant tackle in the middle of the best defensive line in the nation. While he would likely shift to defensive end in the the Redskins' 3-4 scheme, Robinson would be a massive upgrade over anyone along the team's defensive line.

Round 2, No. 53 Overall: WR Michael Thomas, Ohio State

Thomas is unlikely to be available this late in the draft, but if he is, you can bet the Redskins will consider him. He's been compared to A.J. Green by some draft experts and likely has just scratched the surface of his ability.

Round 3, No. 84 Overall: C Ryan Kelly, Alabama

Although Kory Lichtensteiger did a nice job after moving from guard to center, Kelly would be a significant improvement as he's the best center in this entire draft class.

Bashaud Breeland will be one of the starters at corner for the Redskins in 2016, but there isn't any other guarantee at the position. Russell could come in and compete for playing time right away.

Round 5, No. 158 Overall: CB Cyrus Jones, Alabama

Grabbing back-to-back cornerbacks shows the Redskins' lack of depth at the position. Just like Russell, Jones could compete for playing time immediately while also taking over the team's kick and punt return duties.

Round 6, No. 190 Overall: OLB Dadi Nicolas, Virginia Tech

The Redskins desperately lack a pass rusher opposite of Ryan Kerrigan. Trent Murphy hasn't developed into the player the team expected, and Nicolas could be the perfect type of pass rushing specialist to help benefit the defense.

Perry Riley and Will Compton will likely be the starters at middle linebacker in 2016, but reserves Keenan Robinson and Mason Foster are both free agents. Drafting a player like Chubb will help with the team's depth at the position.

Dashon Goldson had a bounce-back year in 2015, but there isn't another safety on the roster capable of starting. The position was so thin that they moved DeAngelo Hall to strong safety towards the end of the season.
