New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Will Release Marques Colston

By Jason Fletcher

The New Orleans Saints‘ all-time leading receiver will reportedly be released by the club. Marques Colston will finish his Saints career with 711 catches for 9,759 yards and 72 touchdowns.

Although Colston has certainly had a brilliant, borderline Hall of Fame career with the Saints, he clearly wasn’t the same player at 32 years old in 2015. He struggled separating from corners, and when quarterback Drew Brees was able to find him open, Colston struggled bringing the ball in. Although he was only credited with three drops on the season, he had numerous balls hit his hands that he couldn’t bring in.

Another aspect of the Saints’ decision to cut Colston is to create more cap space for the offseason. They currently only have $6.55 million to sign any free agents and all of their draft picks. That certainly won’t be enough to make all of the improvements they need to make from a disappointing 7-9 season.

Colston’s release will leave the team with youngsters Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead and Brandon Coleman as the top three receivers. Those guys are more than capable of getting the job done and don’t be surprised if the Saints decide to add a cheaper veteran in order to take over Colston’s role as leader of the group.
