NFL Combine: Average Wonderlic Score By Position

This year’s NFL draft prospects are being measured and scrutinized this week, and it’s worth questioning how much the process during the combine really matters to success on the field.

Combine attendees are also given the Wonderlic test, which theoretically measures intelligence and ability to process information. Here’s a look at some average Wonderlic scores for draft prospects by position. For some context, a perfect score is 50.

Offensive Tackle — Average Score: 26
Offensive linemen have to diagnose defenses and work together, and for what it's worth offensive tackles have the highest average Wonderlic score of all the positions.

Center — Average Score: 25
Centers are the quarterbacks of the offensive line, working in concert with the signal-caller to call protection schemes and identify blitzers, so a high level of preparation and intelligence is absolutely necessary.

Quarterback — Average Score: 24
Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick not only scored a 48 on the Wonderlic in 2005, he also finished the test in a record nine minutes. Quarterbacks have to be smart, so this high average mark is not shocking.

Offensive Guard — Average Score: 23
As mentioned with offensive tackles, guards also have to be able recognize what a defense is doing and be able to adjust. Functional intelligence is a requirement.

Tight End — Average Score: 22
Tight ends have to function well as pass catchers and blockers, at least ideally, so being smart enough to retain an entire playbook is important.

Safety — Average Score: 19
Safeties are often asked to be difference makers all over the field, particularly in today's NFL. Brains and brawn are a job requirement.

Linebacker — Average Score: 19
Depending on defensive scheme and overall responsibility, intelligence requirements can vary for linebackers. Ideally a combination of talent and brains would be present.

Cornerback — Average Score: 18
All-around physical ability is the most important trait for cornerbacks, but as with every other position intelligence can push a player to the next level among his peers.

Wide Receiver — Average Score: 17
Wide receivers can get by strictly on their talent level and have a nice career. But a high level of intelligence and understanding of offense can be the difference between being very good and great.

Fullback — Average Score: 17
Traditional fullbacks are a dying breed in the NFL right now, but intelligence (real or perceived) can allow some to be impactful players.

Halfback — Average Score; 16
Running backs are typically the most likely players to make an immediate impact as rookies. Intelligence can push some featured runners to sustained stardom, while others fizzle out as their physical abilities deteriorate.
