Colin Kaepernick Should Stay With Chip Kelly, San Francisco 49ers

By Jason Shawley

Three years ago, Colin Kaepernick was playing in Super Bowl XLVII and on the cusp of delivering a league-tying sixth Lombardi Trophy to the franchise. Despite the loss, the future seemed bright. Jim Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers at the time but he’s since left for the University of Michigan while Jim Tomsula lasted just one season in charge with a 5-11 finish in 2015.

Kaepernick took over the team mid-season in 2012, leading them to an NFC championship. This time around, the fifth-year signal-caller was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert after a 2-6 start. Kaepernick has regressed each season since 2013, and this past year, he threw just six touchdowns and five interceptions.

The 49ers quickly found their new coach last month when they hired former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. From the outside, it looks like a perfect match. Kelly had a rough ride with the Eagles and was in need of a fresh start, while San Francisco was one of the best situations he could walk into. They’re an organization that’s not far removed from success and still have a lot of talent. Kaepernick is also the kind of quarterback Kelly has been wanting to work with since he arrived in Philadelphia.

Kelly spoke a few days ago, saying that Kaepernick would absolutely be with the team next season. Less than 24 hours later, it was reported that Kaepernick is seeking a trade. It’s hard to get a read on what’s actually happening on the inside, but the best thing for both parties involved is for Kaepernick to stay right where he is.

Kaepernick has the potential to have a career renaissance under Kelly’s offense. It’s fast-paced, spreads out the defense and caters to a mobile quarterback. Kaepernick is the same style of quarterback Kelly worked with exclusively when he was the head coach at Oregon. If the two can find common ground, it could be the second chance that both sides desperately need.
