DeMarco Murray Should Return To Dallas Cowboys In 2016

By Jason Shawley

DeMarco Murray had a breakout season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, opening up possibilities for him to sign a huge contract. His league-leading 1,845 yards earned him a five-year, $40 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Murray’s season in Philadelphia went just about as well as the team’s 7-9 record would suggest. He only eclipsed 100 yards rushing once and finished with 702 yards and six touchdowns.

Looking back on the season, it’s really no surprise that Murray struggled so much in Philadelphia. The Eagles had a lot of problems on the offensive line, especially through the first half of the season. In fact, Murray totaled just 47 yards on the ground through the first three games of the season. He was held under 50 rushing yards in half of the team’s games.

It’s also clear now that Murray’s running style didn’t work well with the offense Chip Kelly wanted to run. The Eagles’ offense consisted of a lot of running outside of the tackles, which was the strength LeSean McCoy whom Murray replaced in Philadelphia’s backfield. McCoy is known for his quickness while Murray is a physical, downhill runner.

Kelly isn’t in Philadelphia anymore, but speculation is building that Murray will be traded this offseason. The destination that makes the most sense would be his old home in Dallas. It’s a great fit for Murray personally because of the dominant offensive line that would be in front of him and the familiar offense he’d be playing in. It also makes sense for the Cowboys who just endured a 4-12 campaign. Darren McFadden ran for over 1,000 yards, but that’s more to credit of the offensive line. I have no doubt the Cowboys will be huge players in the Murray sweepstakes if he’s on the market.
