Ezekiel Elliott Should Be Houston Texans’ No. 1 Draft Target Following 2016 NFL Combine

By Taylor Sturm

The Houston Texans made it to the NFL playoffs by winning the AFC South last season, but floundered out on offense as they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20. With the AFC South being anyone’s to win next season, the Texans must strike it big in the 2016 NFL Draft if they are to compete with the likes of the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts, who all seem to have found their franchise quarterbacks.

That being said, there will likely be no top quarterbacks available by the time the Texans draft at No. 22 overall. After Jared Goff and Carson Wentz, Connor Cook and Paxton Lynch are projected to go in the second or third rounds, meaning that drafting them at No. 22 would be a huge mistake. Therefore, the Texans should address another major offensive need and snag running back Ezekiel Elliott from the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Elliott, who has started to grow in popularity as of late, was fantastic during his time in college and at the combine. Elliott ran for over 1,800 yards as a sophomore and as a junior, averaging over six yards per carry. He also received well over 250 carries in both of those seasons, showing that he can definitely be relied on as a three-down back. With the Texans cutting Arian Foster, he would start Day 1 for Houston and make an immediate impact.

Houston’s defense is already at a level necessary to succeed in the NFL; the Texans just need to move the ball on offense to give them a break. Elliott gives them that option, as well as the added bonus of being able to explode down the field for a big gain. With no top QBs likely available when the Texans draft, Elliott is the perfect fit.
