5 Potential Trade Destinations For Chicago Bears TE Martellus Bennett

By Brad Berreman

After angling for a new contract before last season, and ultimately not getting his wish, tight end Martellus Bennett‘s future with the Chicago Bears seemed to be non-existent. A rib injury led to couple missed games (and ultimately ended his season later on) and reports of his being in a “mental funk” while questioning his role surfaced, so Bennett’s days in Chicago were surely numbered entering the final year of his contract in 2016.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported the Bears are working with Bennett’s agent to find a team to trade him to, and here are five teams that should be on that list.

Heath Miller's retirement takes away long-time stability at tight end for the Steelers, and an offseason addition looks likely. Bennett is now one of the best available options at the position, so Pittsburgh should have interest.

Bennett spent the 2012 season with the Giants, and he set his career high for receptions (55) prior to landing with the Bears. The team has questions at tight end, and the price could be right to bring Bennett back to New York.

3. Denver Broncos

With Vernon Davis headed for free agency and Owen Daniels mulling retirement, the Broncos could find themselves thin on proven options at tight end. Bennett would be an upgrade for sure, and adding another good option for whoever will be under center is something Denver should look to do.

The recent release of Roddy White leaves the Falcons thin in terms of proven pass catchers, and an upgrade at tight end could be sought this offseason. Bennett looks like a good fit overall, if Atlanta is a place he'd like to land.

Making a trade within their division may not appeal to the Bears, perhaps rightfully so. But the Packers need a capable tight end, and Bennett is as good as any option that could be signed in free agency.
