Philadelphia Eagles Rumors: Signing Evan Mathis Would Give Chip Kelly Needed Slap In Face

By Mike Gibson

A little less than a month ago, free agent offensive guard Evan Mathis torched former head coach Chip Kelly by tweeting he had “no regard for human life.”

If, as rumored, the Philadelphia Eagles reach out to Mathis to plug a leaky hole in their offensive line, the beauty of the potential move could be that GM Howie Roseman gets to at least figuratively slap Kelly in the face. Kelly cut Mathis when the guard asked for more money and then Mathis latched on with a Denver Broncos team that won the Super Bowl. Roseman got the same kind of treatment by Kelly when the former coach demanded GM power.

Roseman was demoted to a job title that included supervision of equipment, which led him to be the brunt of some brutal jokes by the local media. Presumably, he knows about Kelly’s low regard for human life.

Roseman is now back in charge after Kelly’s release of Mathis left the Eagles with an offensive line that largely consisted of 2014 backups. Since Mathis was a 2014 starter for the Eagles, signing him would logically upgrade the line back to more acceptable standards — at least at the guard position. Roseman has taken the high road since Kelly’s dismissal and has not said a negative word about the team’s former coach, but signing Mathis would be a clear signal that the organization believes Kelly made a mistake with the veteran guard.

Now if only Roseman could bring DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy back, the Eagles might be made whole again. For now, though, they will have to settle for filling holes and worry about getting whole part later.
