Russell Okung And 4 Other Free Agents Baltimore Ravens Must Pursue In 2016 Offseason

By Geoffrey Knox

History has shown us that free agency may not be the best way to build a team in the NFL, but it does offer a quick fix to problem areas. It can destroy a team’s chemistry, but when done correctly, it can put a franchise back into contention. The Baltimore Ravens won’t be able to acquire everyone on this list, but it would be wise to research all of them and maybe sign one or two if they can.

5. Olivier Vernon, Defensive End

Vernon is actually a defensive end, but he satisfies a tremendous need. The Ravens are getting older and need an outside rusher. There'd be no issues in standing Vernon up as he would transition from a base 4-3 to the 3-4 alignment the Ravens deploy. Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs may not have much left in the tank.

4. Travis Benjamin, Wide Receiver

Joe Flacco needs weapons. It's as simple as that, and it would be nice if they were young weapons with some tread still on the tires. Benjamin would help the Ravens stay in relevant as this team's rivals have playmakers everywhere.

3. Janoris Jenkins, Cornerback

Let's focus on the rivals for a moment. Currently, the Ravens are looking up at two divisional opponents that can air it out with anybody, and the Ravens can't continue to put a struggling secondary on the field to try and match up. Adding a solid corner could help in a division full of Pro Bowl receivers.

It's hard to understand why anybody would let Okung get away, but if he's available, the Ravens would have to give him a look. He's too good at the position, and the Ravens have to get this need addressed as quickly as possible.

1. Tashaun Gipson, Safety

The Ravens have looked serviceable at the safety position at times. At others, they appeared to look as though they had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Gipson has quickly become one of the best at his position, is still young and gives Baltimore the best safety they have had since Ed Reed left.
