New York Jets, Ryan Fitzpatrick Heading Toward A Messy Split Over Contract Terms

By Timothy Downs

After a career season with the New York Jets in 2015, it appeared as if veteran signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick had found a home for the foreseeable future with Gang Green.

He led the team to a solid 10-6 record, and tallied excellent statistics along the way (3,905 yards, 31 TDs to 15 INTs), but unfortunately fell short of making the playoffs by losing to Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.

Considering the solid campaign, his long-time relationship with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey (the two were together in Buffalo) and the rapport Fitzpatrick built with wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, you would think the Jets would be willing to exhaust all options to retain the capable gunslinger, right?

Wrong.

Apparently, the Jets and Fitzpatrick aren’t even in the same universe when it comes to money in their most recent contract negotiations. It seems they could be headed for what will undoubtedly be a messy divorce laden with enough drama to make a soap opera jealous.

According to NFL Network’s Albert Breer, the Jets are only offering Fitzpatrick slightly more than what Chase Daniel received (three-years, $21 million with $12 million guaranteed) to presumably be the backup to Sam Bradford with the Philadelphia Eagles.

If that is indeed the case, it’s totally understandable why Fitzpatrick has balked at re-signing with New York, especially considering Brock Osweiler — who has made just seven career starts — just received $18 million per season from the Houston Texans.

Speaking of Osweiler, his decision to leave the Denver Broncos has opened up an enticing job in the mile-high city. The Broncos just won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning playing the worst football of his career. Denver’s taken some hits in free agency, but its defense should be good enough to compete for another ring next season.

Rumors are spreading like wildfire about a marriage between Fitzpatrick and the Broncos.

The Los Angeles Rams also make some sense for Fitzpatrick. Incumbent quarterback Nick Foles certainly isn’t the answer for the Rams, who want to make a solid intial impression during their first campaign back in Los Angeles.

As each day passes, it’s becoming increasingly likely Fitzpatrick will not be returning to the Jets. This would essentially force New York to go after someone like Colin Kaepernick or Robert Griffin III, as the two quarterbacks they currently have under contract — Geno Smith and Bryce Petty — aren’t thought of as capable of leading the Jets to the playoffs in 2016.
