The New York Jets’ quarterback situation is one of the most interesting storylines so far in this offseason. Ryan Fitzpatrick remains the Jets’ top target but the team has flirted with trading for Colin Kaepernick, has brought in Robert Griffin III for a visit and could explore trades for other signal callers. One quarterback the Jets should look into acquiring is Mike Glennon of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Glennon, 26, is stuck on the bench behind Jameis Winston. He never really had much of a chance in Tampa Bay despite a pretty solid 2013 campaign. In 13 games, he completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards with 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions. In 2014, he played in six games, completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,417 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. These aren’t mind-blowing numbers by any stretch but in 19 games he has thrown for 4,025 yards, 29 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and completed 58.8 percent of his passes.
The Jets would love to have Fitzpatrick back and there is good reason for that. He put up one of the best seasons by a Jets quarterback in team history. However, if Fitzpatrick becomes unaffordable then the 6-foot-6 Glennon would be an intriguing option for them. In 2013, Glennon put up those numbers with Vincent Jackson and Tim Wright being the two leading receivers and the only two who had more than 30 catches that year. He wasn’t working with the best receiving corps, certainly nothing like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.
The quarterback market is limited right now and the Jets might be forced to make a trade because of their limited cap space. Glennon would be both an affordable and good backup plan.
