Jon Gruden Calls Carson Wentz Most NFL-Ready Quarterback In 2016 Draft Class

Jon Gruden‘s ‘Quarterback Camp’ series on ESPN has become a tradition during the NFL‘s pre-draft process in recent years, and the current edition with this year’s group of quarterback prospects is being filmed. Getting past the cliches and catchphrases can be a challenge with Gruden at times, but he does know quarterbacks and his perspective is always unique.

While filming his session with Carson Wentz, Gruden called the North Dakota State signal-caller “the most NFL-ready quarterback” he has seen “in the last couple years.” That is high praise that should not be taken lightly, especially with Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota going off the board with the first two picks in 2015 and having solid success as rookies. Gruden clearly has no concerns about Wentz playing against lower-level college competition at a FCS school, even if those concerns will linger for teams and other analysts between now and late-April.

Wentz had NFL-caliber size (6-foot-5, 237 pounds) and skills, and he does not carry any sort of concerns over his hand size (10 inches) like fellow top prospect Jared Goff. The Cleveland Browns are again in the market for a quarterback via the draft this year, and Wentz is likely to be on their radar with the No. 2 overall pick.

Among the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, I still prefer Goff to Wentz right now. Goff played against better competition in college and has a longer track record, so the step up to NFL competition isn’t likely to be as steep. That’s not to say Wentz won’t be a good (or even great) quarterback at the next level, I just think he’ll be set up to fail if he’s forced into action immediately as a rookie.
