Pittsburgh Steelers Must Continue To Look For Safety In Free Agency After Missing On Eric Weddle

By Jason Shawley

The Pittsburgh Steelers were considered to be one of the final candidates on free agent safety Eric Weddle‘s list of interested teams, but the sweepstakes ended Monday when the coveted veteran signed a four-year, $26 million deal with the archrival Baltimore Ravens.

Safety is one of the Steelers’ greatest needs this offseason and it seemed Weddle was a great fit. With his decision to go elsewhere, Pittsburgh must still find someone to fill the void, and the best course would be to find an immediate solution through free agency rather than the NFL draft.

Current projections have Florida State‘s Jalen Ramsey as the only first-round safety talent in this year’s draft, and he’ll likely be off the board long before the Steelers are on the clock. Southern Utah‘s Miles Killebrew is attracting attention and would be a great selection as a mid-round pick, but if they want an immediate upgrade, they’ll have to keep looking at guys in the open market.

The best available fit for the Steelers might be former Houston Texans‘ safety Rahim Moore. He’s one of the youngest still available and would likely sign relatively cheap.

Moore was drafted 45th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2011 and has nine career interceptions. He had his best season in 2014 when he registered four pics. He’s not the long-term solution at the position, but all the Steelers need is a little more stability in the secondary to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. If the defense can hold opposing offenses under 25 points consistently, they should be able to win 12 or more games with their explosive offense.
