Cleveland Browns Rumors: Team Would Be Worst Possible Landing Spot For Robert Griffin III

The Cleveland Browns have been in search of a serviceable starting quarterback since the beginning of time, but they continue to fail in every attempt. Since the “new” Browns were founded in 1999, there have been 24 different starting quarterbacks for the franchise. It should come as no surprise that they have made the playoffs just once in that time frame.

With the overhaul of the front office and the subsequent hiring of head coach Hue Jackson, it makes perfect sense that the Browns are looking down every avenue in an attempt to find their quarterback of the future. Unfortunately, they may be heading down another disastrous path as the team reportedly had a “great meeting” with former Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Let me be the first to say that I believe Griffin can still be successful in the NFL in the right situation. If he’s allowed to come in and work behind a veteran starting quarterback and learn what it means to run a pro-style offense, he could absolutely take over as a starting quarterback in two or three years. That structure, however, would not be available with the Browns.

If the Browns were to sign Griffin, he would likely be relied upon to be ready to take the reins of the starting job by next season at the latest. While the team could start Josh McCown in 2016, the fans would be putting pressure on the organization to play Griffin at the first sign of a downturn. After what happened to him in Washington, he needs time to digest and learn before being thrust into another starting job.

The new regime would be much better off drafting either Carson Wentz or Jared Goff with the No. 2 overall pick and then letting them sit behind McCown while they acquire pieces to build around their young quarterback. If they were to go the Griffin route and he bombs, then it’s another handful of years wasted for a fanbase that is tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Invest in your future Cleveland, don’t look for a quick fix.
