Tennessee Titans Absolutely Shouldn't Trade Marcus Mariota

By Brad Berreman

The Tennessee Titans have the No. 1 pick in next month’s draft, and general manager Jon Robinson has suggested more than once that he’s open to trading down. A trade down seems very unlikely for the Titans though, unless a team is determined to get ahead of the Cleveland Browns at No. 2 overall and willing to give up a bounty to do it. But that doesn’t mean trade scenarios aren’t out there.

A ludicrous trade scenario has surfaced, via Senior Bowl Executive Director Phil Savage:

And former NFL scout John Middlekauff has added his thoughts to Savage’s trade idea.

Injuries to both knees cost Mariota a total of four games as a rookie last season, but he looked like a legit quarterback of the future by completing 62 percent of his passes with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Those knee issues likely limited his effectiveness as a runner, with 34 carries for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but better health should allow Mariota to fully become a dual threat in his second season.

Upgrading the structure around Mariota should be the top priority for the Titans, and they’ve taken some steps toward doing that so far this offseason. Bailing on a promising signal-caller one year in is never a good idea, even if Tennessee’s current coaching staff is ill-equipped to get the most out of his talent. Trading Mariota would effectively be resetting a rebuilding process that has barely begun in its current incarnation.
