Houston Texans' J.J. Watt May Be Closer To Retirement Than We Realize

By Jason Fletcher

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has been named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year two seasons in a row, and three out of four. Only five seasons removed from being drafted No. 11 overall by the Texans, Watt has already registered a whopping 74.5 sacks and 15 forced fumbles. Despite his dominance, and being only 27 years old, Watt may not have much time left in the NFL.

While it’s a bit surreal to think about Watt retiring from the NFL, it certainly makes a lot of sense. So many players end up playing as long as their bodies will allow them and it really affects their life after football. Watt is cool with pulling a Calvin Johnson and retiring early in hopes of being able to pursue a better quality of life after the NFL.

Watt’s thought so much about retirement that he already knows what he wants to do with his life.

“I think I would be coaching high school football in some capacity,” the four-time Pro Bowler said, via CBS Sports. “If that requires being a high school gym teacher, whatever it may be, however I can do that, I just want to have that impact. And that is what I want to do when I’m done (playing in the NFL). I want to coach high school football and that’s always what I’ve wanted to do.”

Although an acting career is also something Watt would be interested in.

“Maybe my life takes me a different path with movies and things like that, but as of right now, at some point in my life I will definitely coach high school football,” Watt said. “Just because the impact you can have on kids, and the wisdom you can help give them and teach them and I think they are so impressionable.”

I’m in no way, shape or form a Texans fan, but Watt has to be one of the most likable guys in the league. Every year I find myself rooting for him to break the sack record because of how great his is off the field.

Do you, J.J.
