Percy Harvin To Retire From NFL At Just 27 Years Old

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver and Florida Gators standout Percy Harvin has somewhat unsurprisingly elected to retire from the NFL, according to Pro Football Talk‘s Mike Florio.

Harvin, 27, burst onto the scene as a rookie after the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He cemented Offensive Rookie of the Year honors by tallying 60 receptions, 790 receiving yards, six receiving TDs and 135 rushing yards. Harvin was just as dynamic on special teams that season, racking up 1,156 kick return yards and two TDs.

Harvin was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2013 and won a ring with the franchise thanks to an excellent performance in Super Bowl XLVIII. However, he only laced up in six regular season games over two seasons due to a hip injury before he was traded to the New York Jets in 2014. He signed with the Buffalo Bills last winter, but only saw action in five games with the Bills before a knee injury ended his season.

Harvin dealt with migraine issues during his time in Minnesota, which kept him off the field at times. It’s a crying shame how his professional career turned out, as he had the potential to be one of the greatest slot receivers of all time.

As you may recall, Brett Favre was particularly fond of Harvin during the two’s time together with the Vikings. But being beloved by teammates wasn’t something Harvin was known for throughout his short career. Harvin confirmed a few physical altercations with Doug Baldwin and Golden Tate in Seattle after his departure.

Everybody calls him, ‘Tough Doug’ or ‘Angry Doug,’ ” Harvin told the Buffalo News. “That was one of the times, he tried to use me to show he was a tough guy. I tried to walk away and he came back. It got messy.

Harvin claimed the two wide receivers were “jealous” of him.

“It was a constant thing,” Harvin said. “It was something that got under my skin. I felt like they were acting like kids.”

Unfortunately, Harvin and NFL fans alike will always be left to wonder what could have been when it comes to his playing career.
