Where Is Drew Rosenhaus' Ultimatum For Josh Gordon?

Last week, Drew Rosenhaus — one of the most powerful agents in the NFL — threatened one of his newest clients with an ultimatum. The player in question was unemployed quarterback Johnny Manziel, and the ultimatum was simple — if Rosenhaus was to keep representing the former Cleveland Brown, he had to get treatment. Manziel has been very publicly drinking and getting in trouble, obviously spiraling out of control with little disregard for his NFL future, and Rosenhaus wasn’t going to waste his time trying to find him a new team if he didn’t seem to care.

Today, the ultimatum expired, and Manziel has now been dropped by two agents in a little over two months. It was the first time Rosenhaus has ever fired a client, but when a stipulation is given, and a player doesn’t follow it, you don’t have much of a choice.

What I’m most curious about, though, is Rosenhaus’ other headline-stealing client. He also represents suspended Browns receiver Josh Gordon, who just had his reinstatement denied after failing yet another drug test. Gordon has to stay clean until Aug. 1, when he can once again apply for reinstatement.

One would think this latest failed test would force Gordon to avoid any troublesome situation he can. However, he’s still being spotted hanging out with Manziel, most recently at a bar at the Coachella music festival.

Manziel was told by Rosenhaus he needed to stop getting into trouble or else he’d be fired. With that in mind, here’s what appears to be a simple question — where’s the ultimatum for Gordon?

Again, because of how often Manziel was getting caught by TMZ cameras drinking and partying, Rosenhaus told him to shape up or find a new agent. Granted, while Gordon isn’t appearing nearly as disheveled, in what world is him hanging out with Manziel ever a good thing?

Remember, due to the program Gordon is under, he can’t drink alcohol. It was alcohol that led to his most recent suspension. So, there’s reason to be concerned about footage of him at a bar with someone who’s known for having a drinking problem.

Sure, you could argue that, until proven otherwise, Gordon hasn’t done anything wrong. At the same time, find me one bit of proof Manziel isn’t a terrible influence for the wideout. He was just fired because he refused to get treatment and stop partying. Meanwhile, Gordon just failed another drug test, and has been dealing with suspensions throughout his professional career.

To be blunt, how is Rosenhaus OK with Gordon still hanging with Manziel?

From his perspective, his client has to stay away from drugs and alcohol in order to get back to making money in the NFL. In the past week, said client was looped into an incident regarding a party Manziel hosted, which was full of drugs, and was spotted with him at a bar.

Rosenhaus was quick to put Manziel on notice, why not do the same for Gordon? Why is it so hard to say, “If you want me as your agent, you’ll stay away from this guy”? You have a client publicly hanging out with someone you just severed ties with. It’s not asking much to try and put a stop to it.

Gordon has just as much to lose as Manziel. One more screw-up and he could be banned again. Unlike Manziel, though, Gordon is proven. He’s a record-breaking receiver who’s throwing away millions with each mistake he makes.

That said, for some reason, Rosenhaus is not treating Gordon with the same level of concern as Manziel. But, while Rosenhaus is forgetting about Gordon, Manziel sure isn’t. As a result, Gordon continues to put his chances of reinstatement at risk while his agent watches silently.
