Cleveland Browns Need To Trade Their First-Round Pick of 2016 NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles reportedly have the framework for a trade for the No. 2 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft in place. This is a deal the Browns must make and they should pull the trigger on the deal if the reports are true.

Everyone knows the Browns need a quarterback. Obviously they aren’t sold on Jared Goff or Carson Wentz being a franchise quarterback.  If they were, they wouldn’t shop the pick. They must be confident they can get a quarterback later in the first or in another round. If so, this trade makes perfect sense for them given the number of holes they have on their roster.

The Browns would reportedly give the Eagles the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. In return they would receive the eighth overall pick and a third-round pick this year. They would also receive the Eagles’ first and third-round picks in 2017.

There are so many reasons for the Browns to make this trade. They can easily grab an impact player with the eighth pick. If they are smart, they can grab two players in the third round who can potentially start or at least contribute right away. They would also have two first-round picks next season and two third-round picks. There is a very good chance both of those 2017 picks will be in the top 15.

This trade should be a no-brainer for the Browns. After this offseason in which they released Karlos Dansby and Donte Whitner on defense and Johnny Manziel on offense, they have a lot of lockers to fill. It certainly didn’t help that Josh Gordon failed another drug test, won’t be reinstated by the NFL and could possibly have ended his once-bright NFL career.

Once again the Browns find themselves in full rebuild mode. They need as many draft picks as they can get. Even if they were set on Goff or Wentz it would be years before they were able to compete with them. Better to grab the picks and hope a quarterback falls or there is one who piques their interest next year.
