Virtually unprecedented wheeling and dealing has left the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles with the first two picks in the 2016 NFL Draft. That has yielded a “what’s next?” vibe heading into draft, with more notable trades possible during Thursday night’s first round.
Before the Cleveland Browns traded the No. 2 overall pick last week, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the San Diego Chargers were getting “just as much action” for the No. 3 pick. Chargers general manager Tom Telesco has acknowledged that calls about the third overall pick have slowed down, while also indicating he’s still open to a trade.
The Rams and Eagles, barring a huge surprise, will take quarterbacks Jared Goff and Carson Wentz is some order on Thursday night. The Chargers obviously don’t have an immediate need at quarterback right now, with Philip Rivers in place, but they could benefit from trading down in the first round and stockpiling more picks in an effort to fill multiple holes.
That said, the Chargers are in an enviable position. They will have their choice of the top non-quarterbacks when they go on the clock at No. 3, with defensive back Jalen Ramsey, offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, defensive end Joey Bosa and defensive end DeForest Buckner among the options they’ll have.
A top-five pick is rare for San Diego, as 2015 was their worst finish since 2003, so the chance to add an elite talent is something that should be taken advantage of. Even with no guarantees for how that player will turn out, the Chargers should stay put and make their pick at No. 3 overall without a second thought.
