After the Philadelphia Eagles acquired the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, it was widely assumed that they were going to be selecting a quarterback. Howie Roseman confirmed that was the team’s plan, and they appear to have alienated Sam Bradford in the process. Bradford has reportedly demanded a trade, and the team should attempt to trade him to the Denver Broncos if they want to get the most in return.
It is no secret that the Broncos are in major need of a quarterback. The team lost Peyton Manning to retirement while Brock Osweiler decided to sign with the Houston Texans in free agency. Currently, the only quarterbacks on their roster are Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian. Neither is a viable long-term starter, so trading for Bradford would make a lot of sense.
Last season was the first time since 2012 that Bradford had played in more than seven games. The veteran had one of his best seasons, completing 65 percent of his passes for 3,725 yards and 19 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. He only held a .500 record, but with a superior supporting cast, Bradford could lead a team to the playoffs and maybe to a couple of wins.
With the Broncos, Bradford would be a terrific fit. He was significantly better last season than Manning, and since a good amount of their supporting players have stuck around, the Broncos are going to be competitive once again. Yes, they have lost some key defensive players to free agency, namely Malik Jackson, but they are still going to be one of the better teams in the AFC.
The Broncos would not have to give up too much to get Bradford. The most the team should give up for him would be a second-rounder and maybe another mid-round pick. However, if they do that then they can utilize their first-round pick to draft some help on the offensive line (Germain Ifedi) or grab a defensive end to replace Jackson. That would be great for the Broncos, as they could then draft a developmental quarterback in the mid-rounds and set up their team for future success.
Overall, if any team needs to get Bradford, it is the Broncos. The team already agreed to a deal with the Eagles to acquire Sanchez in the offseason, so perhaps that history will be a factor. A deal would almost certainly be mutually beneficial and I would not be surprised to see a deal get done in the coming days.
