Mike Tirico Is Leaving ESPN For NBC This Summer

Sports broadcasters move jobs at times, as age and contract status bring about change. It’s rare a real big fish moves at his relative peak, but Sports Business Daily has reported that Mike Tirico is leaving ESPN when his contract ends this summer to take a job at NBC.

Tirico has been with ESPN since 1991, with notable versatility as a play-by-play man for the network’s football, basketball (NBA and college), golf and tennis coverage. He has been the play-by-play guy for “Monday Night Football” since ESPN took it over in 2006, and early indications are Sean McDonough is a candidate to replace Tirico next to Jon Gruden in that booth.

NBC picked up a slate of Thursday night games for the 2016 NFL season, so it’s likely Tirico steps in to do play-by-play for those five late-season contests. Sunday night play-by-play man Al Michaels‘ contract reportedly goes through 2017, so if he does not return after that Tirico is a possible successor.

NBC also of course has a heavy golf presence, including a deal with the British Open starting in 2017, so Tirico is sure to be step into some of that coverage. Bob Costas will again host the network’s Olympic coverage in Rio this summer, but if he wants to reduce that obligation or step aside entirely down the road Tirico could be involved there as well.

ESPN and NBC have not yet commented on Tirico’s move, which is expected until a contract has been signed. Once that happens and a timetable becomes clear, I see Tirico’s NBC debut coming at a golf tournament this summer or as part of Olympic coverage in some capacity.
