New York Jets Don't Need To Trade For Sam Bradford

By Brad Berreman

Sam Bradford is reportedly mad at the Philadelphia Eagles to the point he wants to be traded and will not show up for any more offseason work. It’s a ridiculous request, given the contract the Eagles gave him in early March, but trade rumors have already surfaced.

The Denver Broncos quickly inquired about Bradford, which is not surprising, but Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver reported the Eagles’ asking price was too high. The New York Jets and Cleveland Browns are also possibly in the market for a quarterback, and the Jets look like a particularly viable landing spot as Ryan Fitzpatrick remains unsigned.

Even with an ongoing stalemate, the Jets have stated publicly that their focus is to get Fitzpatrick signed. Currently on the quarterback depth chart for New York is Geno Smith and 2015 draft pick Bryce Petty, which would obviously be a dismal situation to enter the 2016 season with.

If Philadelphia’s asking price was too high for Denver, it absolutely will be for the Jets as well. In the Eagles’ position they are right to hold the line with Bradford, and they are also right to seek what they feel is value in a trade. Whether another team should meet that expectation is a different question, but Bradford is clearly in no position to demand anything and the Eagles are willing to enter next season with him as their starter.

An extended market for Fitzpatrick’s services has never materialized, so a reunion with New York is inevitable. Unless that changes, and it shouldn’t at this stage, a trade involving any meaningful draft pick for Bradford is not a good move for the Jets.
