New York Jets Should Steer Clear Of Sam Bradford At All Costs

By Christopher Gamble

The New York Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick are still at odds on a new contract. The team has checked in on Brian Hoyer in the meantime and is now being mentioned as a possible destination for Sam Bradford who has demanded a trade form the Philadelphia Eagles. This would be a huge mistake for the Jets.

The Jets don’t have many picks, six to be exact. They aren’t trading their top picks for a quarterback like Bradford, and if they do someone needs to check the water. They also don’t have much room to maneuver salary cap wise. They currently sit a little over $3 million in cap space and will need another $3 million to sign their draft picks. Bradford comes with a cap hit of $7 million.

Trading Muhammad Wilkerson would free up the required space, but the Jets aren’t trading Wilkerson for Bradford, nor should they even contemplate that. The Jets need a quarterback but not a mediocre one with an injury history like Bradford.

The best option for the Jets is Fitzpatrick followed by Hoyer. These are veteran guys who can hold down the fort and don’t cost nearly as much as Bradford, or shouldn’t once they sign. Bradford signed a two-year deal for $35 million, a fortune for a quarterback who isn’t a part of the team moving forward. What’s more is as soon as he heard the Eagles traded for the No. 2 overall pick he threw a fit. That isn’t a guy you want leading your team.

Fitzpatrick wants to come back to the Jets, and the Jets want him back. The problem is money, but that money should come available if and when the Jets deal Wilkerson and restructure a few other deals. The focus should be on getting a deal with done Fitzpatrick and leave Bradford where he is.
