Miami Dolphins Rumors: Trading Up For RB Ezekiel Elliott Would Reflect Poorly On Organization

By Jacob Camenker

Draft day rumors are in full swing, and one of the major rumors of today is in regards to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 8 overall pick. The Browns are reportedly willing to trade down in the draft for a second time to a team that wants to select Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott in the top 10. Reportedly, several teams would be interested in doing so, but one team stands out among the others.

The Miami Dolphins are one of the teams that are going to be in the mix for Elliott. The team reportedly covets the back and views him as a potentially great player for their offensive system. This would make sense, as new head coach Adam Gase formerly worked for the Chicago Bears, who have also shown immense interest in Elliott.

However, the Dolphins trading up to No. 8 would not be a great look for the organization. The reason for this? The team already owned the No. 8 pick in the draft earlier in the offseason before trading it to the Philadelphia Eagles. The team thought that they could move down and still acquire Elliott, but that proved to be incorrect.

So essentially, all the Dolphins did was move down several spots to acquire a couple of overpaid and injury-prone players in Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso. If they stay put, it means that they will be in a rough spot, as their projected top targets may be off the board. However, if they trade up they will be giving up assets to move up to a spot that they already had owned.

The Dolphins need to do what is best for their team, but if they move up it will make it clear that they should have held on to their original pick. The team needs to decide if trading up for Elliott is really worth it. If he is, they should pull the trigger. If they are questioning the decision, then they should stay put and maybe target Derrick Henry in the second round.
