New York Jets Rumors: Muhammad Wilkerson Trade Sounds Unlikely

By Jason Fletcher

Ever since the New York Jets placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson, there have been reports that the team would rather trade him than attempt to work out a long-term deal. With the draft happening tomorrow night, it seems time has run out on the team and the two sides will have to co-exist next season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets “fielded calls” on Wilkerson, but teams that were interested were unable to gain any traction in trade talks. General manager Mike Maccagnan said the Jets aren’t “actively shopping” their big defensive tackle which makes the situation a bit confusing.

Obviously, Maccagnan wants to get the best value he can for Wilkerson which is why he said they aren’t shopping him, but if they hold onto him through next season, the Jets are unlikely to get anything at all for one of their best players.

Wilkerson is recovering from a broken leg he suffered in Week 17, and he’s due to make $15.7 million if he plays under the franchise tag in 2016. The two sides have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal or Wilkerson will be guaranteed to hit free agency next offseason.
