Sam Bradford Makes Career-Saving Choice By Reporting To Philadelphia Eagles' Minicamp

By Jason Shawley

The Philadelphia Eagles have their starting quarterback back at the team facility, and despite his inconsistencies, it’s the best move for him and the organization.

Sam Bradford attracted a lot of negative attention in recent weeks when he hastily demanded a trade following the Eagles’ move from No. 8 to No. 2 in the 2016 NFL Draft to select another quarterback, North Dakota State‘s Carson Wentz. Bradford signed a two-year, $35 million deal with the team on March 1 and poorly handled the news that they intended to draft a young quarterback.

From a football standpoint, Bradford certainly wouldn’t be characterized by anyone as an elite quarterback. He’s been a middle-of-the-pack starter since coming in the league with the then-St. Louis Rams in 2010. Granted, he’s been plagued by injuries and played with mediocre rosters, though Bradford has never shown that he’s worth what the Eagles are paying him. He’s been given a great opportunity to return and make a lot of money while remaining the team’s starter in 2016, yet he still felt the need to throw an unnecessary tantrum.

Wentz is not ready to take over as a rookie and the organization knew that when they moved to No. 2 a few weeks back. The purpose of the two-year deal with Bradford was to maintain him as a short-term solution as they find their long-term quarterback. Had he signed a long-term contract, his frustration would be well-founded, but they never intended to make a commitment and that should’ve been clear.

Bradford will still be the Week 1 starter, though I don’t expect him to be well-received by fans when he takes the field on Sept. 11. He’s auditioning for his next job, though his behavior in the recent weeks has done nothing to make him more desirable. Unless he lights it up in 2016, he may have few options when he eventually hits the market. His return to the Eagles was the correct decision, though, and he’s given himself an opportunity that wouldn’t be there had he continued to hold out.
