San Diego Chargers' Joey Bosa Is Already Tired Of Comparisons To J.J. Watt

As a talented defensive lineman coming into the NFL, who also happens to share the same skin color, it’s convenient to compare San Diego Chargers rookie Joey Bosa to three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com went so far as to assert that Bosa will play a role similar to Watt right out of the gate, as a versatile impact performer for the Chargers.

Bosa, for one, is already tired of comparisons to Watt.

Choosing the same No. 99 will not quell the comparisons, but Bosa did offer more specific thoughts on Watt during his introductory press conference.

“He’s obviously one of the best defenders in the league,” Bosa said about the comparisons to Watt in his introductory press conference at Chargers Park. “That’s obviously my goal, to come in and have an impact like that. I’m going to do anything I can to help the team win.”

Bosa did add that he tries to emulate the play of Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett and Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Tamba Hali, which points to the versatility he seeks to have along San Diego’s defensive line.

I understand Bosa’s desire to make his own name in the NFL, and after investing the third overall pick in him, the Chargers obviously have high hopes. But there are worse things than being compared to Watt at this stage, and Bosa will be fine as long as those comparisons aren’t fuel for him to put extra, unwarranted pressure on himself.
