Miami Dolphins Are Right To Wait For Arian Foster To Prove His Health

By Brad Berreman

When Arian Foster was cut by the Houston Texans in March, the Miami Dolphins were one of the teams with possible interest, to the point of having the veteran running back in for a visit.

Foster is working his way back from the Achilles issue that ended his 2015 season early, and with reports of his progress last month came renewed rumors of teams that could be interested in him. That included the Dolphins, with Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reporting they were “monitoring” Foster, but a more recent report from Tuesday said Miami is not pursuing Foster. I would add the caveat of “right now” to that report, but that’s just my speculation since things can and do change quickly.

With Lamar Miller‘s departure in free agency, the Dolphins seem increasingly committed to 2015 fifth-round pick Jay Ajayi as their No. 1 running back. 2016 third-round pick Kenyan Drake is also in the mix, but he seems to be in line for passing down work right out of the gate and does not profile as a threat to be a workhorse.

Foster is expected to work out for teams when he’s 100 percent healthy, which will surely be between now and the start of training camps in mid-to-late July. I personally don’t believe in Ajayi as a starting running back, so I expect the Dolphins to have Foster in for another visit fairly quickly once he’s ready to work out. At this point in the offseason, the Dolphins, and any other team with possible interest, need to wait for Foster to be ready to prove he’s healthy.
