Even though the Phoenix Coyotes don’t play today, they can clinch a spot in the 2011 playoffs if the Anaheim Ducks can beat the Dallas Stars. This will be the second year in a row the Coyotes have made the playoffs.

Currently, the Coyotes sit in the 5th spot in the Western Conference, but that seeding can change easily. The Coyotes are only 3 points out of the 3rd spot currently held by the San Jose Sharks and are tied for 4th with the LA Kings who they play Wednesday in LA.

The Coyotes are hoping they can put together a deeper playoff run than they did last year. Last year the Coyotes met the Detroit Red Wings in the first round. The Red Wings and Coyotes were evenly matched and the series went to 7 games. But in the 7th game Detroit beat the Coyotes in Glendale ending the Coyotes season. Phoenix has 3 games left this year, and is hoping to win at least 2 of them so they can secure home ice advantage like they did last year.

One big boost for this team going into the playoffs is the potential return of star defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who may return to the Coyotes lineup in the next couple weeks. As the team takes these few days off to recuperate, Jovonovski is preparing for his return.
