This is almost it, folks.
The Buffalo Sabres will face off with the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, NC to decide the biggest game of the season so far for both teams. Carolina has responded since their woes in February and March, and have won six of their last seven games, not allowing Buffalo to ever go more than 5 points above them for that 8th spot in the East. The Sabres have also fared well, but not quite as well, coming off of an overtime loss to the Washington Capitals last night. That same night, the Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders. The point gap which had been 5, and then 3 points… is now just 2.
And just in time for a meeting between the two teams.
Here’s how they stack up:
Buffalo is 39-29-10, with 88 points. They are 8th in the East.
Carolina is 38-30-10, with 86 points. They are 9th in the East.
Neither team can afford a loss tonight – this game is that crucial. After tonight, there will only be 3 total games left for both teams to play. Carolina has won the last two meetings with the Sabres, a 3-2 overtime win in Raleigh and then a 1-0 regulation win in Buffalo. The Sabres out-shot, and I would say, arguably outplayed the Hurricanes in both of those contests but weren’t able to come away the winner.
There’s really nothing else to say here. It all comes down to this, and I believe if the Sabres win, they will make the playoffs. If they lose, I’d have serious doubts. This evening’s game will be top-level hockey. The game has a start time of 5PM ET and can be viewed locally on MSG.
Let’s Go Buffalo.
