After the Coyotes 3-1 loss last night against the Sharks, Phoenix dropped to 6th in the west and set up a first round rematch against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Coyotes couldn’t string together back to back victories as they fell last night in San Jose. Lauri Korpikoski was the lone goal scorer for Phoenix as the Shark’s offense proved too much for the Coyotes to handle. This loss solidified the Coyotes 6th seed in the west and locked them in a first round series against the Detroit Red Wings.
Detroit and Phoenix have met 4 times this year, with both teams winning 2 games. Phoenix won the last game 5-4 on March 5th in Glendale. Last year when these two teams met, the series went 7 games with the Red Wings prevailing. The Coyotes had home ice advantage last year, but that isn’t the case this year. It will be important for the Coyotes to steal one of the first two games in Detroit because if the series goes 7 games, it will be significantly harder to win in the “motor city”.
Look to Captain Shane Doan and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to shine in this series. Both of these veterans want nothing more than a chance to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup.
The NHL playoffs are just around the corner, and as always they prove to be intriguing. If the Coyotes can pull together their finally healthy squad and surprise Detroit, they could make a real Cup run.
