Drew Doughty, Jonathan Quick Lead Los Angeles Kings to Playoff Win

The Los Angeles Kings beat the San Jose Sharks 4-0 in Game 2 of their first-round series of the 2011 NHL Playoffs.

L.A. was without forward Jarret Stoll, who was serving a one-game suspension for his hit on Ian White in the opener.

Overall, the Kings dominated Sharks and put up a very strong team effort, but the primary credit for the victory goes to defenseman Drew Doughty and goaltender Jonathan Quick.

Doughty tied an L.A. franchise record with four points as he played a part in every Kings goal on the night. He scored twice and had an assist on each of the other two goals.

Quick made 34 saves to shut out the Sharks. The last Kings goalie to record a shutout in the postseason was Felix Potvin in 2002.

“Jonathan Quick was unbelievable,” said Jeremy Roenick after the game.

Penalty killing really made a big difference last night.

The Kings received five minor penalties; the Sharks, six. However, L.A. was able to kill them all, while San Jose allowed two power play goals.

In fact, both of the Kings’ first two goals came with the extra man.

After Ben Eager was sent to the box for slashing Jack Johnson, it was Johnson who would give the Kings their first lead of the series as he sent a slap shot past San Jose netminder Antti Niemi.

Doughty and Michal Handzus got the assists.

Doughty would score his first goal with Ryan Clowe off for elbowing. Like Johnson, Doughty was the victim of the infraction and he scored on a slap shot.

This time, Ryan Smyth and Johnson were credited with the helpers.

Doughty netted his second of the night in the middle period, assisted by Kyle Clifford and Rob Scuderi.

Clifford added the final goal in the third to become the first forward in the game to put one in the net.

Brad Richardson and, of course, Doughty got the helpers.

Right after the game, one T.V. analyst had high praise for the Kings.

“I thought the L.A. Kings were tremendous.”

The series is now tied 1-1 heading into L.A. Game 3 will be played 7:30 p.m. PT at Staples Center.
