If there wasn’t any question about who would start Game 4 in goal, there certainly is one for Game 6.
After rebounding nicely in Game 4, Antti Niemi got pulled just 8:42 into the game after allowing three goals on four shots. Antero Niittymaki finished the game and stopped all 18 shots he faced. This was the second time this series Niemi has gotten pulled. For the series, Niemi has a 4.30 GAA and a .850 save percentage. In comparison, Niittymaki has a 0.66 GAA and a .970 save percentage. Niittymaki’s stats have come in limited action, but both times, he kept the Sharks in the game after Niemi was pulled.
So, who starts Game 6?
I’d start Niittymaki. Niemi doesn’t look like himself, although the defense has really let him down. Nitty went on a torrid run during the 2006 Winter Olympics and led Finland to the Gold Medal game. He’s a very streaky goalie, so maybe he’s on one of his hot streaks right now. It’s a very small sample size, but he’s playing well right now.
Edit: A few minutes before I finished this article, it was announced that Antti Niemi will be back in goal for Game 6.
