Minnesota Wild Draft Profile: Jonas Brodin
Name: Jonas Brodin
Birth Date: July 12, 1993
Hometown: Karlstad, Sweeden
Height: 6′ 1″
Weight: 169 lbs.
Drafted as Minnesota’s 1st Pick – 1st Round/10th Overall
Scouts have been beaming about Jonas Brodin since he became draft eligible. A very strong skater, the defensemen uses his highly advanced hockey IQ to see plays unfold before they happen. Watch any clip of the youngster on Youtube, and you will also notice how calm he is in just about any situation, with or without the puck. While these intangibles can be used for him to show off his passing ability, they also transfer over to the defensive side of the puck, where the protection of his own zone stands out as well. Brodin has shown the ability to be physical at times, but will need to bulk up before hitting the ice at the Xcel Energy Center if he wants to be effective in that category at the NHL level.
Brodin looks to be a smart choice for the Minnesota Wild, as they dealt their best defensemen, Brent Burns, to San Jose on draft day for forward Devin Setoguchi, not to mention some of the team’s difficulties at the position last season. Obviously, the odds of the 18 year old suiting up for the Wild in the very immediate future are steep, but this selection could pan out for them well in the near future.
