2011 Offseason: Armchair GM
My initials may be GM, but I am far from one. Here is what I think the Sharks should do this offseason:
-Trade Torrey Mitchell for a draft pick. He’s a decent penalty killer and has speed, but he doesn’t do much else.
-Re-sign Kyle Wellwood to a two year contract worth $2.5M ($1.25M cap hit).
-Sign Joel Ward to a three year contract worth $9M ($3M cap hit). He has speed, he’s a very good penalty killer, and his performance in the playoffs showed that he has some offensive ability.
-Sign Fredrik Sjostrom to a one year deal worth $800K. He’s also fast and can kill penalties.
-Sign Zenon Konopka to a one year deal worth $800K. He can kill penalties as well. He also fights a lot, which would take the burden off of Ryane Clowe and Douglas Murray.
-Re-sign Kent Huskins to a one year deal wotth $1M. He is an effective bottom pairing defenseman that has some chemistry with Jason Demers, but he was criticized because of his cap hit.
-Re-sign John McCarthy to a one year deal for $625K. He would serve as the 13th forward, as I like his game better than Ferriero’s.
-Send Justin Braun to the minors. Even though he was good last season, he struggled at times, and last year was his first professional season.
-Call up Mike Moore to serve as the seventh defenseman. His cap hit is very low.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m) / Brent Burns ($3.550m)
Douglas Murray ($2.500m) / Dan Boyle ($6.666m)
Kent Huskins ($1.000m) / Jason Demers ($1.250m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000
CAP PAYROLL: $62,340,834
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,959,166
I really think Jan Hejda would be a perfect fit for this team, but saving some cap space for next year to re-sign Logan Couture, Brent Burns and Jason Demers is a huge priority.
