2011 Dallas Stars first round pick Jamie Oleksiak will be on the Dallas Stars roster in the near future. Oleksiak will not be on the Dallas Stars roster this season. Instead the Northeastern defenseman Oleksiak will take his talents to Saginaw.
Jamie Oleksiak is making a transition from college at Northeastern to the juniors in the Ontario Hockey League. The Dallas Stars 2010 first round pick Jack Campbell made a similar transition going from the US National Developmental team to the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL. Windsor got to the Western Conference Finals defeating Saginaw before losing to the eventual OHL Champion Owen Sound Attack who would end Windsor’s quest for a 3 peat in the OHL playoffs.
Oleksiak will play for Saginaw Spirit in the Ontario Hockey League also known as the OHL. There are 20 teams in the OHL. Last year the Saginaw Spirt won the West Division in the Western Conference by edging out their division rival the Windsor Spitfires by 2 points. The Spitfires defeated the Spirit in 5 games during the OHL Playoffs to end Saginaw’s season.
Maybe Jamie Oleksiak will be the defensive difference maker that Saginaw needs. The Spirit had offensive players like Brandon Saad, Vincent Trocheck, and Josh Shalla. None of these players were drafted in the first round even though there was talk about Saad and Trocheck going late in round 1. Since none of the 3 players I mentioned went in round 1 of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft the odds are they will all return to Saginaw along with Jamie Oleksiak making the Spirit a legit contender in the OHL.
I felt like this team lacked a defensive presence who could carry the team. I know the Spirit played awesome defense in the regular season. Saginaw’s defensive production in the regular season did not transition in the postseason once the OHL Playoffs started.
Oleksiak has the size to make an impact like his idol Zdeno Chara. Before we compare Oleksiak to Chara lets see what Oleksiak does for the Spirit in Saginaw this upcoming season.
