Drafted as Minnesota’s 5th Pick – 6th Round/161st Overall

With their 5th pick in the draft, the Wild surprised many people by not only selecting their third high school player, but a goaltender.  The franchise already appears stacked at the position, so when it was announced that Minnesota had taken Stephen Michalek in the 6th round, there was a lot of head scratching going on from fans.

Having said that, Michalek is a butterfly goaltender with an NHL frame.  Because of the nature of the competition he’s played with and against, he has shown an ability to stand tall when seeing 50 or more shots, compiling a .918 save percentage.  Stephen is technically sound, with good lateral movement in the crease.  He shows great composure with guys around the net, and prides himself on being able to see the puck and make saves in heavy traffic.

Michalek has his work cut out for him for sure, as the Wild currently have 3 or 4 goalies that show a lot of potential that are not up with the NHL club yet.  However, he will head to Harvard University this fall, and will therefore have 4 years to get better and find a way to stand out among his peers.  Trades and injuries happen all the time, so who knows, maybe this will pan out to be a good selection for Minnesota some day in the future.
