Former Toronto Maple Leaf Wade Belak Dies at Age 35
Former Toronto Maple Leaf player and renowned tough guy Wade Belak died in his Toronto condo early Wednesday afternoon. Belak is now the third NHL tough guy to die this offseason, New York Rangers, Derek Boogaard died in May, then Rick Rypien of the Winnipeg Jets in the month of August.
Belak was drafted 12th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1994 NHL Draft. Belak was most known for the 7 years he spent with the Maple Leafs. He was traded to and from the Maple Leafs. But the 5 more consistent seasons he had with the Maple Leafs, Belak recorded 100+ penalty minutes in all of them. He was surely a fan favorite.
Belak was going to be a contestant for CBC’s ‘Battle of the Blades’ show this fall. As well as a part of the Nashville’s Predators television broadcast family.
After doing a tribute of videos for Rypien on the Maple Leafs site at Rant Sports, expect a tribute of videos from me on the weekend in memory of Belak.
