Representatives from both the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers were on hand for the official announcement of the 2012 Bridgestone Winter Classic Monday at Citizens Bank Park.
Perhaps the worst kept secret in sports is now official; the Winter Classic will be played in Philadelphia on January 2nd between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers.The game will return to a day-time start, beginning at 1 PM.
The NHL also made a few more announcements surrounding the Winter Classic experience. On New Year’s Eve Citizens Bank Park will host the Rangers/Flyers alumni game. The AHL will hit the Winter Classic ice on January 6th when the Philadelphia Flyers AHL affiliate Adirondack Phantoms will host their long-time rival the Hershey Bears. Between the Winter Classic and the AHL game the site will be open for public skating and could possible host some High School and Collegiate Hockey.
On the media end, the HBO series “24/7” will once again cover the Winter Classic. The show will run for four weeks and will debut on December 14th at 10PM EST on HBO. In fact, the “24/7” cameras were rolling at today’s announcement.
NBC, the television host of the Winter Classic and the NHL, made an announcement of their own. The “NBC Sports Network,” formerly Versus, will launch on the same day as the Winter Classic.
