Chicago Blackhawks VS Dallas Stars Game Summary

1st Period Summary

Neither team scored in the first period.  Dallas outshot Chicago 13 to 9 in shots on goal.  Dallas’s defense did a solid job limiting Chicago to under 10 shots on goal.  Both goalies performed exceptional in the first period.  Corey Crawford and Kari Lehtonen both made fantastic saves for their teams in the first period.

2nd Period Summary

Less than a minute into the second period Alex Goligoski recorded a goal to put the Dallas Stars up 1 to 0.  Late in the period Jamie Benn gets the Dallas Stars a 2nd goal to put them up 2 to 0.  Despite this Dallas was outshot 22 to 12 by the Blackhawks in the 2nd period.  The Blackhawks outshot Dallas 31 to 25 in shots on goal heading into the 3rd period.  Lehtonen was playing lights out at goalie through 2 periods.

Crawford’s saves kept the Blackhawks defense in the game.  The Blackhawks defense was shaky and Lehtonen’s goaltending prevented any opposing chances.

3rd Period Summary

Both teams did well penalty killing.  Chicago was 0 for 4 on the power play.  Dallas was 0 for 2 on the power play.  Both of these teams looked bad penalty killing last year.  Both Chicago and Dallas performed well in the penalty killing department.

The defense picked up in the 3rd period.  Both defenses kept their opponents to under 10 shots on goal in the 3rd period.

Late in the 3rd period Chicago pulled Crawford to get an extra man on the ice.  The Blackhawks would score and make it 2 to 1.  It still would not be enough as the Stars would win 2 to 1.

Chicago outshot Dallas 38 to 33 in shots on goal.  Crawford played well going 30 for 33 in the saves department.  Lehtonen made 37 of 38 save attempts and came 14 seconds away from recording the shutout.

Postgame Summary

Dallas got a much needed early win.  The Stars were the more aggressive team.  The number that stands out is the fact that the Dallas Stars managed to record 37 hits while the Blackhawks only recorded 19 hits.  When both teams penalty killing units click, the more aggressive team usually pulls away.  Tonight that team was the Dallas Stars.  Things could change tomorrow though as the Dallas Stars travel to Chicago for a rematch with the Blackhawks.
