Game 5 Preview
Match up: San Jose Sharks vs. New Jersey Devils
Location: The Prudential Center in Newark. NJ
Time: 7 PM EST
The New Jersey Devils have been cooling their heels for the last six days thanks in part to a scheduling anomaly that gave them nearly a week off despite playing just four games. New Jersey has not played since a 3-2 shootout win over the Nashville Predators last Saturday and the players are itching to get back at it tonight against the San Jose Sharks at the Prudential Center.
Led by head coach Pete DeBoer the Devils seem to have forgotten all of last years struggles jumping out to a 3-1-0 start. Ilya Kovalchuk leads all players in ice time and points with four (2g 2a). Its the teams best start in nearly three years and they are doing it without the services of veteran netminder Martin Brodeur. Brodeur is still out resting his severely bruised shoulder. For now the starting job rests squarely on the shoulders of Johan Hedberg who has been stellar between the pipes. Hedberg will get the start again tonight.
San Jose (1-3-0) has lost eight of their last 10 games against the Devils and hasn’t won in New Jersey since the 1999-00 season. The Sharks are looking to change their luck in the Garden State and avoid their worst start to a season since 2002-03. The Sharks’ visit to the Rock also marks the return of long time ex-Devil defenseman Colin White. The Devils dumped him and his $3 million annual salary back in August. With all the younger, less expensive alternatives on defense White became expendable.
I do find it ironic that White’s former team is 3-1-0 and his current team is 1-3-0. Lou Lamoriello certainly knows when to push the right buttons and the right time.
After six days off I’m ready for this game to start already.
