Devils Face Capitals; Kovalchuk Will Miss Third Straight Game
The New Jersey Devils get back into action tonight with the first game of a home and home series against the Washington Capitals. This is the first meeting between the clubs this season.
The Devils have won three is a row thanks in part to the strong play of rookie Adam Henrique. Henrique scored the game winner with 3:19 left in regulation against the Carolina Hurricanes. It was Henrique’s second straight game-winning goal and his fourth goal in the last three games giving him 6 points (4g 2a) in five games.
The Devils have been able to put together a bit of winning streak despite the absence of sniper Ilya Kovalchuk. He has been sidelined since pulling a leg muscle in a win against the Philadelphia Flyers. Don’t expect to see him today or tomorrow.
Kovalchuk was unable to practice again this morning and will not play tonight. Head coach Pete Debeor also confirmed that he won’t travel with the team to Washington for Saturday’s game.
The Devils will have Vladimir Zharkov in the line-up tonight after he was recalled from Albany to fill the vacant roster spot left when Eric Boulton was placed on IR.
Zharkov was a player I thought could have a positive impact on the club this year so it’s nice to see him get another shot. Many believe Zharkov shouldn’t have been sent to Albany in the first place.
Martin Brodeur will get the start again tonight. Brodeur is 2-2 on the season and win tonight will pull him over .500 for the first time since opening night
New Jersey is 5-3 when they score three or more goals in a game.
