Game Day Preview: Detroit Red Wings @ St Louis Blues -- 11/15/2011

***More NSFW language than usual… it is Detroit after all. I just cant control myself

Overview:  Were going streaking!!! This game comes complete with all kinds of streaks as the confusing Detroit Red Wings (9-5-1) invade Scottrade Center to take on the Blues (8-7-1).  The Red Wings started off the season 5-0 before suffering a beating courtesy of the then 6-0 Capitals.  That was the start of 6 consecutive losses before fixing things and winning 4 straight.

The Blues look to assist the Wings tonight in starting another losing skid.  The Blues have been awesome of late.  In their last 3 they are 2-0-1 and have not allowed an even strength goal since Davis Payne was the head coach.  Hitchcock has the team playing scared and that’s fine as long as that fear can drive this team to the next level.  Hitchcock is the first Blues coach to start his tenure without a regulation loss in his first 3 (I think*).

Last Season:  The Blues posted a respectable 2-3-1 record vs. The Winged Wheel last year.  But the defining game of the season series last year was a 10-3 shellacking in Detroit where even Cam Janssen got in on the fun with a goal and an assist.

Injury Report: For the Blues there are no changes on the injury front once again.  The usuals are the only one.  For those of you that don’t pay attention those people are: McDonald, Perron, Crombeen, and Huskins.  For the Wings, Todd Bertuzzi, who is a total fuck, is out with sinus infection.  Detroit will also be without Ian White, Jan Mursak, and Brendan Smith who is serving the final game of a suspension.

Who’s Hot:  During their recent 4 game win streak, pretty much everyone for the Wings has been playing well.  The player that has stuck out the most during this stretch has to be Jimmy Howard.  Howard has shut out the opposition twice in the last 4 and has stopped 95 of 99 shots over that stretch.  That means Howard is only seeing an average of 25 shots a night over this run which means the defense is doing its job.  Up front for Detroit, Johan Franzen has played well of late to.  In his last 4 he has a scoring line of 5-4-9 which includes at least a point in every one of those games along with a hat trick last week vs. Colorado.

As much as I don’t want to do this TJ Oshie gets the nod for the Blues today.  Oshie, who has been on my shit list for a long time, is in the middle of a put up or shut up year and fighting for another contract from the team.  Oshie has been in serious need of some discipline for a long time and hope the new coach is someone that will keep him in line.  Oshie is finally playing up to his potential and has not tried forcing the play as of late.  His major flaw is he always tries to do to much.  He has slowed his game down and let the plays happen.  Right now he is tied with Kevin Shattenkirk for the team lead with 11 points, 6 of which have come in the last 5 games.

Prediction:  This one really could go either way.  Since the Blues are on home ice and have played so well under the Arch (5-1-1) and Detroit has played kinda so-so on the road (2-3-0) I have to give this one to the Blues in a back and forth contest.  Brian Elliott will be human for once and allow 3 goals but the offense will pick him up and score 4.  Blues 4, Wings 3.

Another prediction I can add with confidence, David Backes will not score 4 goals again. (Or 5 depending on who you ask, I still say he tipped in the McDonald goal.)

Other Notes: New Cardinals manager, Mike Matheny will drop the puck before the start of the game for those of you that care about baseball.

And finally, because I cant bite my tongue anymore, I have to display my hatred for Detroit and their arrogant, bandwagon fans that always seem to invade Scottrade.  You can go to road games but can’t fill up “Hockeytown”?  How does that work?  Is there to much burning rubble to make it down to the games?  I don’t understand, but hate you all the same. FUCK DETROIT
