Matt Read’s Late Goal Lifts the Philadelphia Flyers Over the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1
Both the Philadelphia Flyers and the Phoenix Coyotes combined for 73 shots but they could only muster three goals. Rookie right winger Matt Read got the game-winning goal with just 18.6 seconds left.
Two former teammates of Ilya Bryzgalov, defensemen Derek Morris and Adrian Aucoin criticized him earlier in the day including Morris saying that he gave up bad goals. “I always felt good about those guys,” said Bryzgalov. “Every person in their life has opinions about everyone. You can’t pay attention if they think like that. I can’t change his mind.”
“He seems to be pretty steadfast from day to day,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. “He gave us an opportunity to win. We had to fight. It took 59-plus minutes for us to get the lead and finish the game, but he was solid, like he’s been for the last two weeks for us.”
Both netminders combined to stop 28 shots in the first period before Philadelphia broke the tie in the second period. James van Riemsdyk scored, his seventh of the year, when he beat Mike Smith with a snap shot at 12:37 in the second. JVR along with Sean Couturier helped fill in for Jaromir Jagr when he left with an injury in the first period, which is believed to be a groin injury. Jagr will not travel with the team when they goto Winnipeg.
Mikkel Boedker tied it up just 3:38 into the third when he banged home a loose puck that at first looked like Bryzgalov had it covered. Matt Read would win the game for the Flyers when he put home a Max Talbot rebound with just seconds to play in the game. “We just had to get pucks to the net and hope for a lucky bounce or a good scoring opportunity,” Read said.
The Flyers PK unit did their job again last night killing four Coyotes powerplays. Philadelphia has now stopped 34 of their opponents last 35 powerplays.
