GAME PREVIEW: Capitals @ Sabres (Saturday, November 26, 2011)
There’s really no magic formula here for the Sabres. It would be nice to start the game with a lead, instead of being down 2-0 or worse. Of course, that didn’t work out so well on Tuesday night against Boston, but at least the Sabres got a point in that game.
The Capitals are not a particularly good road team, compiling a 4-6-0 record on the road so far in 2011. Of course the Sabres haven’t been a very good home team, with a 5-6-1 record in the First Niagara Center so far this season. The Capitals have a higher-scoring offense than the Sabres, but the Sabres are a better defensive team and Buffalo definitely possess the better special teams.
While the Sabres need to keep Ovechkin from finding his groove, they also need to keep an eye on Nicklas Backstrom. Backstrom leads the Capitals in total points (25) and assists (18). As usual, the Sabres will try to find offensive contributions from players not named Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek.
For the Sabres, Jochen Hecht, Tyler Ennis, Mike Weber, Tyler Myers and Ryan Miller are all out indefinitely. Cody McCormick and Brad Boyes day-to-day for Buffalo. Jay Beagle, Mike Green and Tom Poti are out indefinitely for the Capitals. John Erskine is listed as day-to-day for Washington.
Jhonas Enroth is expected to start in goal again for the Sabres. Thomas Vokoun is expected to draw the start between the pipes for the Capitals.
