Florida Panthers dive into Shark tank and emerge with 5-3 win

By margaretavila

The Florida Panthers came into HP Pavilion to wrap up their final road game before heading back home.  The Sharks are a team you do not want to let get ahead of you in scoring. The Sharks are unbeatable so far when they score first well until tonight. On this evening the goaltending for the San Jose Sharks was Greiss and Clemmensen went for the Panthers.

Logan Couture scored on a wrister high stick side over Clemmenson 1:16 into the first period with an assist from Burns and just that quick it was 1-0 Sharks. The Panthers scored on the power-play on a goal by Weiss from Fleischmann and Versteeg 1-1 tie but it did not last long as Shark’s McGinn scored on a snap shot with 8:16 left in the 1st period with nice work from Handzus and White behind the panthers net 2-1 Sharks and that is how the period ended.  SOG were 12-8 Panthers

Then in second period Sturm went to the net on his backhand and put one in the Sharks net. His goal was unassisted 2-2 tie game.  With a turnover in their own end by Burns, Fleischmann scored from Versteeg and Weiss right in front of their net stick side Greiss has no chance 3-2 Cats.  The Panthers were starting to take over the game and dictating play.  Jack Skille shorthanded drove the net on Boyle and bounced in the net with an unassisted goal @ 18:09 and now it was 4-2 Panthers.

The Stats for the second period was SOG 14-9 advantage for the Cats; hits 10-19 Sharks and FO won 25-10 Sharks.

The third period will start off with both teams at even strength.  In a quick moving third period the pace was crisp.  Then on the power play from a Fleischmann slashing penalty the Sharks scored from a Couture wrister in the slot from Havlat and Demers bringing the score to 4-3 Panthers.  The Couture goal energized the Panthers and it looked like they were going to give the Panthers all they could handle.  The Panthers scored stick side from Kulikov from Weiss and Fleischmann to seal the game 5-3 Panthers.

The Stats for the game was SOG 35-26 advantage for the Cats; 3 penalties for the Panthers and 6 for the Sharks hits 28-10 Sharks and FO won 36-18 Sharks.

The difference in this game was the speed of the Florida Panthers as the Sharks looked like they were chasing the cats all night. I’m not sure if the Sharks underestimated the Panthers or just were not prepared for this team that they never face. They could not keep up with the Fleischmann/Versteeg/Weiss line that was for sure. The Panthers went 2 for 4 on the power-play which sealed the Sharks fate. The Panthers leave the west with 2 points. More importantly they know they can compete with the teams in the west, which is good to know especially come spring.

Monday night the Panthers will face the Washington Capitals at the BankAtlantic Center, 7:00pm ET on FS-F and on radio 560 WQAM

Scratches in the game – Panthers – Dadanov & Ellerby. Sharks – Vandermeer & Mclaren

The three stars of the night were: 3. Couture (SJ); 2. Weiss (FLA); and 1. Fleischmann (FLA).
