With the New Jersey Devils trailing 3-2 and Johan Hedberg on the bench for the extra attacker Ilya Kovalchuk gives Carolina Hurricanes’ goalie Cam Ward a late Christmas gift.
Kovalchuk threw an errant puck to the point where he thought rookie Adam Henrique was, instead the puck slid down the ice into the vacated net. Since Ward was the last Hurricanes player to touch the puck he is awarded the goal. It’s the first of his career.
The last goalie credited with a goal? Chris Mason back in 2006.
