World Juniors: Team USA Loses, But Hope Remains

By Jonathan Sexauer

Yes, Team Finland scored more goals that the United States, but Team USA dominated this game. The Americans massively outshot the Finns, 39-27, including two periods outshooting them by at least double.

Finland won the game, but because of two reasons. Great goaltending, and luck. Sami Aittokallio, the Finnish goaltended and 4th round draft pick by the Colorado Avalanche (107th overall in 2010) played amazing and stood on his head, stopping 38/39 shots.

However, another reason why the United States lost is because of the awful goaltending by John Gibson. All that Gibson had to do was close his legs, and one of the Finnish goals would have been a save. In addition, his interference penalty at 09:09 in the third period is what sparked the Finns to score two goals within a :29 time span, giving the Finns the factory. If Jack Campbell would have played for the United States, then Team USA would have either lost in overtime, or even had won this game.

Final Score: Finland 4 Team USA 1
