Avalanche Flawless in Shootouts; Duchene out 4 Weeks
The only thing deadlier in shootouts than the Colorado Avalanche is Doc Holiday. The Avs posted their seventh shootout win last night against the Los Angeles Kings. The shootout victory last night makes Colorado perfect in shootouts this season and makes it 10 straight shootout victories dating back to last season.
The victory for the Avalanche comes on the heels of bad news concerning their forward Matt Duchene. Duchene who tweaked his knee going into the boards against the Coyotes found out the results of his MRI; they are not good. Results show that Duchene will miss at least 4 weeks with a knee injury the club is toting as “no more than a sprain.”
Duchene was second in scoring for the Avalanche at the time of his injury. Colorado, however, has faired rather well winning the three games Duchene has missed. Varlamov played out of his mind last night against the Kings stopping all but one shot including those he faced in overtime and the shootout. With play from returning forward Kevin Porter and Ryan O’Reilly, the Avalanche look to make a playoff push starting in early January.
The Avalanche now have a couple days off until their meeting with the Chicago Blackhawks in the “Windy City” on January 6. This game will be a true test of fortitude for Colorado. With dangerous weapons like Kane and Toews, Chicago will make for what a true playoff type game will look like for the Avs.
